Try a different keyboard.

You now need to find out if this is a hardware problem
or a Windows problem. Reboot the machine into the
BIOS, then test the keyboard again. If it works then you
have a Windows problem. If it does not work then you
have a hardware problem.

If you don't remember how to get into the BIOS setup
program, check the motherboard manual that came with
your PC.

I suspect that you have a problem with your USB driver.
To confirm it, you need to borrow a PS/2 keyboard. It
has a round plug with 5 pins. Does it work in the BIOS
and in Windows?

i think the keyboard i have(microsoft multimedia) is ps/2, it has a round
plug with pins, should i thus try the inverse..get a usb keyboard and try it
in bios and windows?

Yes. If two different PS/2 keyboards both don't work, then the port is
probably FUBAR. Switch to USB.

Hi Mr. Plato,

Did you notice in your wisdom the OP's note, posted six hours
before your reply? It read "i think the keyboard i have(microsoft
multimedia) is ps/2, it has a round plug with pins."

ok got a usb adapter and plugged it in a usb port, doesnt recognoze it?
keyboard still doesnt work, no keyboard listed in device manager.

now what?

does the keyboard work on a different machine?
if you have a 'known good' keyboard, try it both in the PS2 port and with
the USB adapter.

we are way past that now. we have established keyboard fine..ps/2 port
fubar.plz read previos postes..

You got an adapter to convert a PS/2 cable to USB? I don't think it usually
work that way. The other way, yes, but not the way you describe. You need a
keyboard that has native USB connection.

If I understand correctly, I'm using a keyboard cable(
aka db9, db11, etc), connected through a usb converter.

That's what I thought you said, and it's my recollection, though I may be
wrong, that PS/2 converted to USB doesn't often work, whereas USB to PS/2 is
OK. While that may be a misconception on my part, it sticks in my brain. I
would try to at least borrow a USB keyboard to test.

Another thing that occurs to me as a vague possibility is to check to make
sure the PS/2 port isn't somehow disabled in BIOS.

I don't remember ever seeing a PS2 to USB KB converter.
I think I saw one for a mouse, but could never make it work.
I have a drawer full of USB>PS2 converters.
I even have a few old AT style KB to PS2 adapters.
As cheap as keyboards are, having a spare would be a good investment.

ok ive scraped the ps/2 tu usb plug and bought a usb keyboard, plugged it in,
and its not working either...
now what?

Use System Restore to return your PC to a point a few days before
your keyboard problems started.
