Keyboard Shortcut Key Assignment (Excel 2003)

Program: Excel 2003
Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard

I would like to assign the function "Merge Cells" in my excel program to a
specific key. I use that function a lot to modify a workbook and would like
to use a key instead of the mouse to apply the function. The keyboard key
assignment menu does not list that function in the assignment window and does
not give the option to select a function for a key by clicking on it with the
mouse. *Is there a way to do it like that? (If I need to set up a 'Macro' to
do this I will need some instruction because I have never used macros)

That does help, but I would still like to use a single key to execute the
command if possible.
