keyboard punctuation settings

I have a computer with an English keyboard arrangement. I'm in Mexico, so i
need to write most of the time in Spanish. There wasn't a problem with the
keyboard until recently, when i had to format my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1150).
Now, instead of the spanish characters like:

ñ á é í ó ú

I get

~n 'a 'e 'i 'o 'u

How can I fix that, keeping English as the keyboard language???

If you use a English keyboard set for Spanish, you can still type in
English..

Go to Regional and Languages - Languages Tab - Details button in Control
Panel and set the keyboard language to Spanish..

There are several different approaches to how to type non-English
accented characters.
I use a little freeware background program called AllChars. This
lets me (in all applications) type many common special characters
(many of these are used in other languages) by pressing the ctrl
key followed by a two character mnemonic combination.

For example, for ñ the two characters are ~ and n. For ç it's c
and , For ü it's u and "

Go to Control Panel - Regional And Language Options. Take the Language
page and click Details.
There if you do not see United States under Keyboard for English in the
lower pane (check its box) , click on Add and search for it in the lower
drop down, so you have English (United States) and United States in
those two panes. Click OK. Then in the parent page, select this
combination in the Default Input language in the top drop down, Apply,
OK and Apply any time it is available on the way as you OK out. Then
close and restart to bring it into use.
