I have lost the Shift Key functionality, and letters
Q,W,E,R U,I,O,P....on my HP laptop running XP. I beleive
it is a software issue as sometimes I have managed to
change the regional settings and reboot, sorting the
problem, but this is not a consistant get out solution.
Any ideas what the problem is? Is it XP or the laptop?

i would say it is the keyboard as changing regional
setting would not disable those keys. try a new one on it.

I can't imagine what regional setting would disable just those
keys and leave the others working. It sure sounds like a hardware
problem to me.

I agree. Check the connector. It could well be a bad pin,
if you have unplugged the keyboard recently.

Had various conversations with people....I was convinced
it was software but many, like yourselves, proposed
hardware. Ended up doing full factory restore, which re-
enabled the shift key, but consistently disable the QWER
UIOP keys etc. and had a different character mapping on
some of the shift key functions.

Deleted the US keyboard and set UK as default and all
working perfectly....the question is "For how
long????!!!!!!"
