Keyboard/ Mouse stop responding

My keyboard and Mouse stop responding all of a sudden for no apparent reason.
Sometimes it just happens while i'm browsing the internet (using IE).
I have all the latest Windows XP updates.
My machine has decent specifications and this problem has started only
recently in the last two weeks.
Can someone suggest as to how I can investigate this further?
I tried to do a system restore but it said I have not made any changes.

Don't blame Windows. The mouse and keyboard plug into the motherboard so I'd
look there first for a problem.

I wish it were as simple as that.
It is definitely not a loose connection. I have to do a power off and its
fine until it mysteriously/randomly happens again.

My suspicions are:

a) power save setting?
b) i use a wireless router/modem (belkin) as well as zone alarm
or
c) maybe something i installed but it has happens while I'm just surfing the
web or maybe using some other app.

Help!

More likely to be hardware problem - overheating CPU or motherboard fault.
Very UNLIKELY to have anything to do with XP.

You might want to try a little trouble shooting first befor e you suspect
ethier windows or your mother board. Try swaping out your keyboard and mouse
first. if you get the same problem it could be a heat problem with your
system. Clean your motherboard and all cards using compressed air-sold at all
computer stores, also have a small acid brush to lightly brush down the
boards, use a vaccum cleaner to help remove any dirt from the system. The
creaves tool on the vaccum is the best way because it is plastic and you get
a high volum of air to remove dirt. Then reseat all your system cards, retest
your system. If your keyboard and mouse don't fail then you've solved the
problem. If not, then try using a keyboard and mouse that connect throught the
USB port and see if you have the same problem.. If you do then I would
reinstall windows before repalcing the motherboard.
the above is what I would do to start I would also remove all cables and
all pci cards-except those I need to run the system and see if the problems
goes away or comes back. I will take awhile.. by the by how long before your
keyboard and mouse lock up?

I was having the same problem my mouse and keyboard would go on and off or
stop responding and i would have to turn power off..My husband had installed
microsoft intellipoint sortware so i uninstalled it and now both are working
fine..

If these are wire-less devices, be sure that they are close enough to
the receiver. I've had problems with a mouse with distances over 3
feet.

I have been having exactly the same problem for a very long time! I even
have a different computer that has been upgraded to Windows XP. I have
dail-up modem. I have read everything I can find and tried everything I know
to do, but can't figure it out. I have updated everything. I don't have USB
mouse or keyboard. I have replaced both to be sure it's not that. I have
uninstalled my Norton in case it was causing the problem. I have run every
type of AV, Spyware, Trojan to make sure it isn't a bug causing the problem
etc... It doesn't seem to have any pattern and it isn't exclusive to being
on the internet. It froze in the middle of writing an email before. When
this happens you can still see everything on the monitor, there is no error
message, you just can't use your keyboard or mouse and have to do a hard shut
down to escape. I have tried watching my task monitor to see if I can tell
what's going on, the process using the most CPU is the "system idle process"!

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows what we can do to resolve
this issue....
