Keyboard equivalent to double-click to select word

I know you can select words with CTRL+SHIFT+ R/L ARROW, but this
requires that the insertion point be at the beginning/end of the word.

Can I use the keyboard to select a word regardless of where the
insertion point is within the word?

In other words I would like the equivalent of using the mouse to
select a word by double-clicking on any part of the word.

Press F8 twice. Pressing F8 once puts you into Selection Mode. Subsequent
presses of F8 will select text and it's similar to holding shift. To turn
off Selection Mode, press ESC.

Thanks. I have never been able to incorporate the Function keys while
working at the keyboard; they are just to far away I guess. I did it
with a macro.
