keyboard cursor problem

I have a Compaq laptop with a new problem. Occasionally, in the middle of
typing a document or an email, the cursor suddenly jumps to an earlier part
of the document. It's very random, occurs within all word programs such as
Microsoft Word, wordpad, etc. I did attach an external keyboard and didn't
appear to have the problem. Is there possibly some function key or shortcut
key that's locked in by mistake causing this? Or, is the keyboard on the
laptop simply malfunctioning because it's bad. If so, can laptop keyboards
be replaced?

Maybe the touchpad is causing the jumps; a couple of taps with a
shirtsleeve button might redirect the cursor.. just a thought.

I have been experiencing the same problem on my Gateway laptop... [Win
XP (SP2), touchpad, no mouse or external keyboard attached] for years
and haven't been able to resolve the issue. My issue happens in any
program, not just Office programs.

I concluded long ago it is a touch pad issue but have come up with no
solution.
