Recently bought a computer from auction and it has a genuine "XP Pro 1-2 CPU"
licence sticker on the side. However, my own copy of XP Pro (no sp1 or sp2)
doesn't accept the key during installation.

Is there any way of telling which version of XP Pro this licence belongs to?

Any help would be great.

thanks.

did you get the original media or recovery disk?

chances are the sticker is for an OEM copy not retail XP.

if you got your Xp CD mixed up, I guess you can either try both license key
and then record it
or try to find a utility to read the key. I would go with the first choice
if at all possible.

No I didn't get the original disk with the computer. I've tried a couple
friends copies of XP pro, one with SP2 and one without, the key wasn't
accepted by both copies. I haven't been able to locate an OEM version to try
yet.

I'd like to find a utility I can put the key into and it tells me what
version of XP Pro it is for, but I can't find one.

Product keys must match with the CD in terms of:
- Editon (Home, Pro, Tablet, Media Center)
- Version (Retail Upgrade, Retail Full Install, OEM, Volume License,
Academic, etc).
- Language.

Hope this explains the situation

Good luck

Sticker on the computer = OEM license.
You need a generic OEM CD and even then - dependent on how things were
setup - that may not work.

Contacted Microsoft's licencing section in Australia via email with the
details, to find out if it is OK to use.

An OEM system recovery CD that wasn't given to you with the PC.
