KERNEL32.dll error message

Tara

Hopefully someone can help. I always get an error message
when trying to run a CD from the CD ROM drive - it
says "The procedure entry point Leave Critical Sectioo
could not be located in the dynamic link library
KERNEL32.dll."

The "Leave Critical Sectioo" changes depending on the CD
that I insert if I remember correctly. Does anyone know
how to fix this? I can't install any new programs or run
several of my other ones.

Thanks,

Tara

From the root of your drive do a search on kernel using the command prompt. Like so. Start | Run | cmd | OK | cd\ | dir /s kernel*.* <ENTER>

If you have more then one let us know how many and where they are. If not and you have two or three kernel32.dll that is fine they are in dllcache, ServicePackFiles and System32. That's OK but you should not have any others. If you have any kernel## where ## is not 32 let us know that too and where they are. Let us know if you do before you do anything.

I would get Ad-Aware 6.0, BHODemon, and HijackThis; install and run them. They are free and easily found on the Net using www.google.com

The fact that this is an on again off again issue based on the CD-ROM you were using definitely imples LeaveCrticalSection CAN be found in kernel32.dll. What LeaveCriticalSection means is that something has omnipotent control of the Operating System and is not able to get out of the CriticalSection it entered to gain that control. Id be surprised if you can do anything at this point but Alt-Ctrl-Del and shut down.

Thank you! I did the root search and it said there were a
total of 8 files found. Also, there are only KERNEL32.dll
files. I can't print or copy from the MS-DOS window,
otherwise I would include all the info.

To summarize - this is where the 8 are: (and it says WINNT
because this computer orginally had NT on it and it got
upgraded to WIN2000)

Directory of D:\WINNT\$KB824141$ - 1 file here
Directory of D:\WINNT\$NtUnistallQ328310$ - 2 files here
Directory of D:\WINNT\$NtUnistallQ329115$ - 1 file here
Directory of D:\WINNT\Driver Cache\i386 - 1 file here
Directory of D:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386 - 1 file here
Directory of D:\WINNT\system32 - 1 file here
Directory of D:\WINNT\system32\dllcache - 1 file here

Thank you again - I will wait on your response before
getting that other software (what does that software do -
just clean up the computer's communications?).

A new error message has appeared (I've seen this before as
well though) - now it won't even open the intro window on
the CD - it says "procedure entry point GetMeouStringA
could not be located in the dynamic link library
USER32.dll" - are the two error messages connected?

thanks,

Tara

Those are all OK. You can print from the MSDOS command window (actually called the Command window) Start | Run | cmd | OK | right-click the System Menu icon in upper-left of Title bar of the command window | Edit... | Select All | right-click the System Menu icon in upper-left of Title bar of the command window | Edit | Copy | open Notepad | paste. Print then if you want to.

Well now ... scratching my head... are you sure this issue only happens off and on by what CD-ROM you have in the drive? How about CDR's does it happen with those? made from a different machine?

Tara I think you better try a sfc. Put your Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the drive. If you get an error with that CD-ROM then we definitely got problems. If so go ahead and OK it. Then go to Start | Run | cmd | OK | cd\ | sfc /scannow /enable /purgecache <ENTER> Let that finish and reboot. Try again and see if the issue re-occurs.

You might have a faulty CD ROM. Try this:

- Boot your PC with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com
- Type this command:
dir x:\ /s
Instead of x:, use the actual drive letter for your CD ROM

If this fails then your CD ROM is faulty. If it does not fail then
the test is inconclusive.

Is Win2000 installed on a FAT32 or on an NTFS partition?
