My friend has currently had problems with this virus called 'Kernel'
any ideas how this is caused and the best way to eradicate it? Is a
option to restore the computer to it's factory settings?
Grateful for any help on this thanks

Viruses are caused by stupidity, i.e., not running antivirus software, not
learning how to use it, not keeping virus signatures current, not updating
the computer with Windows Update, opening suspicious attachments, clicking
on banner ads, downloading from P2P networks, etc.

Once it's on your computer, a virus is very difficult to eradicate. The
first step is to install antivirus software and learn how to use it.

The manufacturer of the computer will know if it is possible to restore the
computer to factory settings.

If your friend has a problem tell him you need the EXACT error message.

There is NO Kernel virus.
There are error messages that relate to the OS Kernel but they are not necessarily related
to viruses.
