Dear Kelly,

Thanks for the tweaks... I tried this but .JPG files are
not amoung the file types listed on the menu for this
tweak..... I ran it anyway and dropped a file onto my
desktop and it still displayed with the generic icon for
the associated display program.....

Did I miss a step?

Hi,

I saw the same question below but it was not really
answered.
I would like to set my WIN XP Pro so that .jpg files
that are placed on the desktop work area displayed as
thumbnails and one can see the graphic content of each
file.

As it is the desktop there is no toolbar as such... just
the taskbar and therefor no place to select VIEW etc.

I know that this is possible for I also have seen it done
but alas, the owner also did know remember how it had
been accomplished.

Is there anyone out there who might know where such a
configuation change can be made?

Thanks,

A

of options for views, you can even install jpgs of youre

tweaking to it,how you want to view, once on youre comput-
er,use search in file types for jpg you installed.

Dear Andrew.....

I don't think you quite understand...

If I place a .jpg file on my desktop I not only want the
file name to display... but also a small thumbnail of the
image so that I can get a visal of the file and not just
a title. What you have described, while useful as far as
file associations are concerned, does not work towards
changing the generic program placeholder that now
displays into a thumbnail.

Hello George,

The following procedure will instruct Explorer to render
the icon for *_all_* ".JPG" files as a small representation
of the actual ".JPG" file itself.

--- open a registry editor ---

[Start] | Run | Regedit [OK]

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
(this key will be highlighted when you select it)

Note: In the right-hand pane, "(default)" = "jpegfile".

Now navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\DefaultIcon
(this key will be highlighted when you select it)

--- Now save this original registry key: ---

On the "Tools" menu, click | File | Export |

In the dialog box titled "Export Registry File",
navigate to a suitable folder,
enter an appropriate fileName, e.g. JPG-OLD.REG,
and click [Save].

( If you need to restore the original icon,
just right-click the "JPG-OLD.REG" file,
then click | Merge | )

--- Now modify this registry key: ---

In the right-hand pane,
right-click "(default)" | Modify |

In the dialog box titled "Edit String",
replace the value with "%1"
(including the quotation marks).

Exit the registry editor.

You may need to re-boot or logoff/logon
for changes to take effect.

No, it will simply restore the default file associations. As David
explained, what you want to do will work for BMP files, but not JPG files.
