keeping window maximized

Win xp pro....How do I keep the windows maximized?? I can stretch the
widow and maximize it, however when doing another task, the next window is
small again. The original goes back to half screen size. I have 'remember
settings' box checked.
 
Mike, if you stretch that window and then click File, then Close it will
remember that stretched size. Works the same in OE, IE and Windows
Explorer.
