how do you keep characters or words from splitting at the end of a line; I
want a required space to keep for example "¶¶ 187" on one line

Go to Insert-Symbol, special characters. One of them is "nonbreaking space."

Another way of inserting a non-breaking space is Ctrl - Shift - Space. This
does the same thing as using Insert - Symbol, but without taking your hands
off the keyboard.

Ctrl - Shift - Hyphen will insert a nonbreaking hyphen if you don't want a
phrase like 50-gallon tank to have the number on one line and the unit of
measure on the next.

I hope this helps.
