"KBDIS.DLL Bad Image" Message at Startup

I'm running XP Home Edition with SP2 installed. The machine had been running
fine until two days ago. Now, when the machine is started the message
"Application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\KBDUS.DLL is not a valid Windos
image. Check this against the installation diskette". If I press return and
continue, the message "application failed to initialize properly (0x0150002)"
displays. The desktop displays - no icons or task bar - no response from the
keyboard. Any help would be appreciated.

KBDUS.DLL is the United States Keyboard Layout

[[application failed to initialize properly (0x0150002) ]]

0x0150002 is not the correct error code.
