KB927779 will not install

I have a win2k advanced server w/sp4 that keeps showing KB927779 as a needed
update. Control Panel add/remove shows MDAC 2.8sp1 as being installed but
does not list kb927779 as being installed. When I try to install kb927779, it
fails without telling me why. I tried reinstalling MDAC 2.8sp1 and that
succeeds, but kb927779 still fails. The MDAC component checker identifies the
installed version of MDAC as 2.8. I also tried downloading kb927779 as a
standalone update but it behaves the same.

Anyone seen this and/or have a solution? The log file from the last
installation attempt is below.

Hello wyocowboy,

What you can try, stop automatic update service, delete c:\winnt\softwaredistribution
folder, start automatic update (folder will be recreated) and try installing
again from windowsupdate.com.

Are you using the latest windows installer version?

Meinolf,

I don't think that Windows Update is the issue, since I get the same type of
failure from the standalone update (file name =
MDAC281-KB927779-x86-ENU.exe). According to my vulnerability scanning
software, kb927779 is missing and is needed to patch a vulnerability, so it
agrees with WU that it is needed.

This machine is running installer 3.1. Can you or someone look at the log
and tell me what the issue is? Another option I am thinking of pursuing is to
uninstall and reinstall MDAC, if there is a way to do that.
