KB891861 - Update rollup 1 for 2000 service pack 4 (specifically fastfat.sys) breaks ability to save

T

Tom S

After applying this update, all our Windows 2000 machines were unable to
save Word XP docs to a floppy disk. ( I know, archaic method but what're ya
gonna do?)
They could save it as .rtf or any other format but not .doc. Some were
having trouble with Excel as well.

We did some troubleshooting and found that replacing fastfat.sys in
system32\drivers and system32\dllcache with the version in the uninstall
folder fixed the problem.

Hope this helps others with the same problem.

Hi,
You should be able to contact Microsoft Technical Support and open a non-fee
support incident and request the hotfix from KB article 904368. Note that
the article 904368 is not yet published.

Thanks. I'll do just that...

This sounds worrying, does it happen ONLY from within Word, or does it
also happen when you COPY the file from Windows Explorer?

Only from within Word.

Hi Tom,

OK, we're getting the same problem in Word 2000 on ALL our computers!

Initial testing with Word 2003 seems to indicate it works OK, but it's
too early to say for sure.

FYI - Microsoft is aware of the issue in regards to working with Word
documents from floppy diskettes. Anyone can contact Microsoft Product
Support Services and report the issue. They inturn will send you a
non-public fix of 904368.

Yes, I saw they updated the support page on July 30th and plan to re-release
the rollup. Maybe it was a data theft prevention security fix!

OK where do I find the working fastfat.sys file?

You mentioned the uninstall folder and finding a working fastfat.sys file? Please be more specific as to where this uninstall folder is located?

Thanks...
Repsond direct is OK... (e-mail address removed)
