After latest Microsoft Update "critical" update was
installed (KB867801) my browser quit (would connect to
nothing!). I had to restore to yesterday to get it back.
What's with that?

Hi,

I've had no problems with that update. My guess would be that you have a BHO
or parasite in yours that did not agree with it. I would start with this
link:

I ran noads and Ad-aware before and after the update. They
found nothing. I tried the update again but got the same
result and had to restore again. One interesting thing,
part of the store said this: "Your computer has been
successfully restored to: Saturday, July 31, 2004 Pre-
867801 RP", then "Some folders were renamed to preserve
their files. To view the list of renamed folders, click
the link below". Clicking resulted in the following list-

Original Name New Name Location
MSHTML.DLL MSHTML(3).DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32
URLMON.DLL URLMON(3).DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32
BROWSEUI.DLL BROWSEUI(3).DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32
Shlwapi.dll Shlwapi(4).dll C:\WINDOWS\System32
WININET.DLL WININET(3) C:\WINDOWS\System32

Does this mean anything meaningful to you?
Thanks for your help.

At the MS site, the 'read more...' link leads to a page where there appear
to be different versions of the fix, depending upon which version of IE you
have currently installed. Did you originally go there and select the correct
one?

Hi David,

Yeah, I took a look at that. None of them seem to be for
my version of IE6,

6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

xpsp2 ??

I wonder when THAT happened. Any ideas?

I've been really good about keeping updated until now. I
hope this doesn't mean I'll have to quit updating. I had
to do a system re-install a while back. That turned out to
be a royal pain in the you-know-what, and I certainly
don't want to ever do that again. What to do. What to do.
Arghh.

Hello again Rick,
Thanks for responding. I grabbed and installed the update
with the link you provided. Unfortunately, the same result
occured. After the update, my browser just won't connect
to anything. Email- same story, dead. FTP client - same
story, dead. I even tried Ad-aware update. It indicated
that it had connected and found no update since the
previous one, but I don't know if that was really valid or
not. So, I'm now restored again to my pre-867801
configuration. Thank God for System Restore. Anyway, do
you have any more ideas as to what might be going on here?
Thanks.

No. I run Windows Update from the Tools menu in IE. After
it scans and says there's a critical update, I click on
Install, always assuming it knows what it's taking about,
and let it install the update. Guess that's a mistake.

Exactly the same here. I am now using netscape until I figure out how t
get IE working again. Bad MS fix.

Did you dl the **correct** version of the fix for your specific version of
IE? It's all there in the 'read more....' on the update page.

have you tried running IE on your system as another user?

you might just want to try making a backup of...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

then delete that same key(after your backup)

IE will recreate a default and you may get going again
