KB828741

I have a SONY desktop PC running Windows XP Home Edition with a cable modem
through a wireless router. I have Norton's Internet Security Professional
running in the background.

I have XP set to automatically download Windows updates.
I install them, when reminded, after reading a brief review of the issue
they fix/improve.
I also occasionally check the windows update web site to make sure I'm
current.
As in life, it's a fine line between obsessive-compulsive behavior and
wisdom!

This has worked flawlessly until recently.
"Critical" update KB828741 seems to have my sytem a bit bewildered.

Issue #1
After "successfully" installing the automatically downloaded upgrade, the
system initially works fine.
Surprisingly, a reboot is not requested by the upgrade when this
installation is completed.
However, when I reboot after this upgrade (usually the next day), I loose my
access to the internet.
IE and OE no longer have an internet provider and I'm forced to work
offline.
I have to revert to an earlier time using System Restore before all seems
well with the world
(but probably minus the upgrade).

Issue #2
After installing the upgrade, as above, (and before rebooting) if I go to
the update web page
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
and search for updates to install KB828741 always comes up as a critical
update I need to install.
I try to be smart. I download and install the update from the web page. The
same thing happens.
Also, it appears the automatic update service doesn't recognize that I have
downloaded and installed KB828741 from the web page and tells me to install
it again.

If you go to my computer's history of Microsoft upgrades it appears that I
have successfully installed KB828741 more times than I want to admit!

SO... How do I get KB828741 update to
1) install correctly once and for all
2) be recognized by
a. Windows update web site
b. automatic update service
3) allow online access after reboot

Thanks
Jim

Check your add remove programs (via control panel)..Hopefully this update
has an uninstall associated with it

Thanks for getting back to me
I checked in add/remove programs and indeed there is a listing to remove
this exact Windows XP Hotfix!
With this hotfix listed shouldn't I assume it was installed?

How come when, absolutely moments before typing this letter when I go to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
and ask the site to check my machine for updates:
it tells me I always need one (and only one) critical upgrade exactly
KB828741.
The paradox: It's installed and but not present.
Something is not recognizing this installation, or it is not really
installed and I'm not protected.

Do I need to install it with a "switch"?
(Possibly.... /o , see below)
(noted in the MS technical info http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=828741 )
Special Options
/l Lists installed Windows hotfixes or update packages
/o Overwrite OEM files without prompting
/n Do not backup files needed for uninstall
/f Force other programs to close when the computer shuts
down
Thanks again

The answer is yes. It was installed. If you remove it, at least your access
to the internet may possibly be restored if in fact this hotfix caused the
problem.
