KB entry 312346 for Outlook 2007 - incorrect and did not solve theproblem!

Office 2007 installed and I'm facing the symptoms described in this KB
article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312346/en-us

Step 2b does not clarify that one should sort by File Types to find
URL:Mailto. Without knowing that it is very difficult to know where
find that entry, especially because "File Types" is also the name of the
tab so one may not know where to look initially.

Step 4d seems to have an incorrect path for Office 2007. It is just
plain wrong. KB should be updated for Office12.

Finally, I went through all the steps and still in the verification step
3e, mailto does not work - iexplore.exe hogs my CPU and nothing every
happens. so my problem is not solved even after working through the
entire KB exercise!

I have already run repair on Office 2007. Any ideas what I can try
next? Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback on the article; I'll pass it on.

Note that in 2b you don't have to sort by File Type to find it. Since
"URL:MailTo:" doesn't hold an extension it is in the (NONE) sector so listed
quite at the top.

Note that there is no step 4d but I assume 2d? ;-)

In the Advanced dialog did you also check "Use DDE"?
Application: Outlook

Great, thanks!

Well, my list starts off with $$$ and $A as the top entries (due to
AutoCAD installation) and then there are (NONE) entries, but that is in
the "Extension" column, to which the article makes no reference. Since
URL started with a "U" I went way down to the bottom of the list, where
I did not find URL:mailto as the article said. So what I'm saying just
a couple of hints in the KB article would help figure out it easily.

Sheesh. Nothing worse than a mistake while pointing out an error, huh?
You are correct, I meant 2d.

Yes, it is exactly as the KB article states, but still no go. If I
click on a mailto link, first I curse myself and then:

1. iexplore.exe hogs the CPU
2. Outlook stops responding
3. Other processes may or may not hang

If I kill iexplore.exe, I may see one of these messages pop up:

"Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not
properly installed"

or something to the effect of, "overlapped i/o in progress"

Then about 70-80 Internet explorer windows open with the mailto: link
that I clicked on. Now that I've see this so many times, I simply log
out using task manager and then log in again to reset everything.

This is really bugging me...I hope someone has a clue about how to fix
this. Thank you!
