Kanguru FireWire Connected Drive: Doesn't mount... but...

P

(PeteCresswell)

One of those Kanguru bricks about 4.5 x 8 x 1 inches with the adapter on the
back that plugs into either USB2 or FireWire depending on the cable used.

http://www.kanguru.com/kdisk.html

Windows sees a "QTS FIREWIRE CABLE IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device", which I guess is the
cable on the back... although it shows up under Device Manager|Disk Drives.

But it's not seeing the hard drive.

I have two of these things (drives) and have had intermittent problems like this
before - which seem to go away on their own eventually.

This problem comes on the tail of a spate of USB2 "Delayed write failed..."
problems.

I have Windows automatic updates turned on.

The Kanguru site says that the driver used for this disk is native to Windows
and there's nothing to download/install.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Are the hard drives formatted and in a type that Windows
XP can see?

I would doubt that this is a driver issue.

I've had bad results with dual-connection (FW-USB) drive cases. I've found
them to be unreliable and not durable. I've had far better results with
simple USB2 drive cases; all the dual-connection cases I have had have
failed.

There's also the issue that Firewire devices seem to be far more susceptible
than USB to terminal electrical damage from accidental hot-plugging. It's
really easy to accidentally unplug these devices, and it can kill them.

So, I only buy USB 2 cases now; I find them more durable, and cheaper.

Try getting a USB2 case, and remove the drive from the Kangaru. Note that
you might need to change jumper settings - some cases and drives don't
always agree on what the jumper should be. If the jumper is wrong, the
case will be detected but the drive itself will not be.

While you have the drive between cases, you might want to try attaching it
to your desktop case and running diagnostic utilities on it there. That
will help isolate the problem.

Yes. And they worked last week and, based on history, may work tomorrow.... but
I don't have a clue why.

Funny you should mention that. I've toasted a Western Digital dual-mode twice.
Even smelt something burning the first time.
