K8V internal audio header.

Hi All,
Just finished building a new system based on the K8V SE Deluxe m/b, AMD64
3200. I am using onboard sound in a 6:1 surround config. A feature of the
case I am using (Xaser III) are external microphone and headphone sockets.
As per the manual it is impossible to have mic/headphone operation whilst in
6 speaker mode. Is the reason because the i/o panel audio connectors are,
obviously, filled with the speaker jacks, or is it a question of audio
"mode" restriction?
Is it possible to connect the external Xaser mic/'phone sockets to the m/b
internal front panel audio connector and have them behave as mic/'phones, or
does the fact that 6 speakers are connected prohibit this? I wouldn't want
to blow the audio chip!
BTW the entire build went like clockwork with no glitches whatsoever. It's
my first home build also and the computer is so fast it blew my socks off.
I'll never buy a shop built beige box again.
Any information or advice gratefully received.

There aren't any application notes that I can find, so it isn't possible
to extrapolate any behavior from a reference design.

The typical Asus reason for multiplexing the audio connectors, is
they only have to put three jacks on the back of the computer,
instead of five. On the A7N8X family, five jacks are reserved for
"deluxe" models and three jacks for others.

The chip has two microphone inputs, so one could be tied to the
multifunction jack on the back of the computer, while the other
microphone input (MIC2) is on the FP_AUDIO. They should be independent.

As for using a headphone on the front of the computer, usually Line_out
is routed through the two jumpers on the FP_AUDIO header. Since Line_out
doesn't have dual functions (it is always Line_out), there is no need
to worry about that aspect.

When you install a case front headphone jack on the FP_AUDIO
header, the headphone jack needs a "return" line, to jumper the
gap in the Lineout figure above. A jack that doesn't have a return
line, will leave the connector on the back of the computer dead.
A jack that does have a return line, mutes the jack on the back of
the computer, when a headphone is plugged into the front of the
case. If not installing a case front headphone jack, then leave
the left and right channel jumpers shown above, in place.

Mic2 is independent of Mic1, so shouldn't be a problem. You may
have to select the Mic you want via the Mixer control panel. I
don't know just how clever the jack sensing actually is.

Using normal install practice, I wouldn't expect any problems. The
most common "no sound output" complaint, is caused by the two
jumpers mentioned above being missing, or the case headphone jack
doesn't have a return line to take the place of the jumper.

Hi Paul,
Thank you for your reply and info. Data sheet downloaded, thank you for
passing it on. I'll see if I can get my head round it tomorrow. I've just
tidied the wiring and made them "pretty". Windowed case don't ya know.
