K8N Neo2 - woes mixing SATA and PATA under XP..

Hi. Until recently my boot disk was a Maxtor 120Gb PATA that
contained a boot partition (XP SP2) and a second partition for,
well, stuff an' all. I also had a second PATA drive for other stuff,
among which was a partition for holding the Windosw swapfile and
a temporary folder. Anyway, the second PATA died a death, so
I went out and purchased a WD 160GB SATA disk, dropped an
image of the Maxtor's boot partition onto it and then partitioned
the PATA disk for the same task as the dead PATA. Fine, it all
works - but...

....Irrespective of which SATA channel I install the WD on, it is
always shared with the PATA (and it doesn't matter whether
the PATA is Primary or Secondary IDE, Master or Slave), and
I could live with that, but there are two noticable side effects:

1) The Windows loading screen goes away after five seconds,
which sounds promising, but there's a hell of a lot of disc activity
at the Welcome screen that causes the system to chug.

2) When logged in, there's an equally noticable chugging
throughout the session - its as if both drives are in contention.

If I disable the PATA (or trash its partitions), the machine is a
speedy little bugger, but if ever that PATA has partitions then
is just slows to a crawl. Way I figure, I can't be the only person
to suffer this effect, so maybe someone out there can point me
to an answer? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks. :)
