I installed Windows XP on a laptop and when it boots up at
the logon screen there is one user and that user needs a
password, but i never made a password nor did windows
setup ask for a password.

I don't what's wrong but it doesn't make sense to me.

Must be XP Home, right ?
Did you try entering no password ?
Did anyone have the opportunity to use the machine
after XP was installed but before you tried to use it ?
If so, ask them, as the first login experience will guide
one through defining account(s).

Yes it's XP Home and i tried no password too...

I was the only one at the machine but i've realized the
problem isn't the password.

There is an error message after saying "The specified
domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

I'm guessing you upgraded from Win 2000 or NT 4. The PC was a part of a
network with domain at some point. XP Home Ed. will not allow you to join a
domain. But back to the problem: you needed to change the local
administrator password to something you know before upgrading it. Here's a
tool that might help you:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/cd030426.zip
Unzip the file, burn the ISO (as image) to CD and boot with it - it's a
small Linux distro.

Blank is the default password, just hit enter and you
will be able to logon
