Just curious

I have learned a lot from "opening" others' websites in FrontPage to see the
layouts and the relationship between Design view and Code view (or the LACK
of table layout and an external css to open & study).
However, when I'm on some sites the option to do so is grayed out. Why?

G

Guest

The option is grayed out where? When you right click? Under the View
dropdown menu? It's usually a javascript that inhibits, not completely
prohibits viewing.

M

Murray

It's usually a javascript that inhibits, not completely prohibits viewing.

Not likely.

I'm sure OP is talking about the icon on the IE toolbar that allows one to
edit the page in FP/Whatever. I've wondered about this myself.

G

You're right, I overlooked the "opening other websites in FrontPage" part
and was thinking "View Source". Sorry.

The host can prohibit it from being used by certain settings on the server.
I just forget how they do it. I think it has to do with cache settings or
host headers, I just can't remember.

Hmmm - sounds fishy to me. Once I have the page in my browser, the host is
out of the picture.

Thank you all for replying. (Yes, I was referring to the icon in the IE
toolbar.) It doesn't really matter; I have plenty of accessible examples to
learn from.

Not fishy at all
- the host header controls the browser
In IIS on server set HTTP Headers - Enable Content Expiration (Immediately)

Access via FP can also be block with Server-Side Scripting...

It doesn't affect the Edit With FP Icon from displaying, however it will block access to FP from
opening the site.

It not a page, it is a setting on the IIS web server for the specific web site.

What we are talking about here (unless I misunderstand) is -

Why does the "edit with ..." icon appear to be disabled when some pages are
opened, but not when others are.

Are your comments directed at that issue?

T

Tom Willett

Murray: It's been a long time since I've seen it, but, IIRC, the edit with
icon could show as disabled when the host header configuration is set up as
discussed earlier.

Somewhat - regarding the ability to open a site in FP, even it the Edit With FP option is available,
it can be blocked via Server-Side Scripting.

Which would be a method to use if you don't have Admin access or your web host will not change the
setting under IIS.

Yes - I'd love to know if this is correct. Let's see if Kevin can mount a
page for us....

K

Kevin Spencer

Hi Murray,

I checked this out on a local IIS web site, by setting the "Enable Content
Expiration" header on a sub-web to "Immediate" as Tom described. I can
confirm that this caused the "Edit with Expression Web" (the equivalent of
the "Edit With FrontPage") menu item to be grayed out in IE. On another site
without this header, the menu item was enabled. So, that should confirm this
particular behavior. I was still able to view the page source code. A
possible explanation is that to edit the page in FrontPage or Expression
Web, IE must fetch the cached page from the Temporary Internet Files folder,
and since the page is not cached, it is unable to do so.
