Being new to this NG, and freeware too, I'd like to really thank all you
guys for all your help. You have saved me countless hours of trial and
error. A great bunch here, it seems......

Also, after visiting all the sites mentioned here (over 30, I'd guess) the
one site that has the quickest learning curve, and great recommendations is
http://j44xm.notlong.com/

My minor quibble is his choice of color for comments is barely readable, but
I love his no BS reviews and why he likes each prog. Maybe when I get more
experience with trying out freeware I'll use some of the other sites with
more listings..........

Strangely, the site with Priceless Ware is not that helpful for me. I tried
all the winners, but maybe I'm just too much a novice to use
these...............BTW, is this OT? IF so, I apologize.

Not off topic at all Josh. Did you really try *all* of the "winners" at
the Pricelessware site? Man, that's a lot of installing and running.

It looks a good collection. Minor editing error -- he lists "Zone
Alarm Pro" under firewalls -- I think that's the paid-for versoin --
but the hyperlink is to the general page which includes ZA free.

Oops............I misspoke. Not ALL, just the ones I thought I
needed.............

An example: I tried PL Cash on Pricelessware. Not my cup of tea. But the Ace
Money was great.

Just a quick OT question here. How is that index held down the
bottom ? Is that some sort of a "frames" setup ? I suppose it could be
"held" at the top as well ? How is it done please ? Anyone ?

Regards, John.

The index menu is a simple matter, actually. The index is held down
with absolute positioning in CSS, like so:
position: fixed;

[rant]
the stupid thing is that the idiot IE browser doesnt understand this.
All the more reason not to use IE, or an IE based browser -- and use FF
or Opera instead. This is exactly why standards are so important, so
things look as they are supposed to, and the way the designer intended
them to...

It is rumoured that IE 11 (scheduled for release in 2011) will implement
full support for "position: fixed". For version 7, the IE team works on
a new revolutionary feature codenamed "tabs".

A quick note to J44xm: If the browser window is narrow (like 800px),
the fixed menu wraps to two lines, which makes it cover up some of the
text in the page footer even with the page scrolled all the way down.
A lil bit of extra margin-bottom on div.pagefooter should fix it.

I gave up on making CSS work with IE, not because it ignores
position:fixed, but because of some of the IE bugs involving floats. I
put up a page of explanation to IE users and moved on. It's made
things a lot easier.

Well, wow. I'm glad that you like it and find it useful. I originally
posted it as a plain-text files solely for my own reference, so that I'd
have a copy anywhere I go. But as I found a few people using it, I thought
I'd add an HTML wrapper around it. I wanted to keep the plain-text-like
layout just in case I decided to take down the page in case it was too
much trouble.

This thread and seeing my site listed at xtort.net[*] have really cued me
in seeing that people actually /do/ use my site. Who'da thunk. I haven't
mentioned this but I'm going to go ahead and remove the plain-text URLs
from the page and make it a true HTML page. (You can see the beta by going
to my current page and changing "freeware.html" to "freeware2.html". This
version will eventually replace the current version. Comments are
welcome.) I'm about halfway done, but things are looking good, I think.
The biggest advantage of this layout is that I'll be able to put in longer
comments and that they'll wrap. It's a full transition from fancy text
file to HTML document.
My minor quibble is his choice of color for comments is barely readable,

I've made a mental note of this.
but I love his no BS reviews and why he likes each prog.

I've never thought of them as reviews, really, but I suppose they are
somewhat. Thing is, everything listed on the page is recommended. Remember
that's it's not meant to be a comprehensive list of software -- just links
to programs that I've tried and like and, to a lesser extent, to programs
that I've perhaps NOT tried but are highly recommended and that seem to be
at least worth looking into.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad that people find it useful.

That, too, is right. ^_^ My position on this has relaxed somewhat over the
past several months, I admit, as every browser has it's rendering issues.
But IE really dropped the ball on this one.

Very, very nice. Took out your old bookmark and added this one<G> I hope you
don't add many more entries, just replace existing ones with a better
program if they become available. I like the idea that this is *your*
opinion of certain titles, and not done by vote or committee.

You know what a camel is?

It's a horse designed by committee<g>

Nice Job and the one page everyone should have bookmarked for reference.
