Jpeg photos are now compressed Bitmap Images

I had to do a windows xp repair install.
Most of my files made it over and are now labeled as "my old data".
My problem is, that all my personal pics that were in "my pictures" folder
are now compressed bitmap images. Photos that were in any other folders, also
made it over and are still full size jpegs etc......

My question is, why did this happen and is there anyway to get these back to
full size images?

Thanks for any help

I have a simular problem when I am browsing and want to save an image on a
site using right click on the mouse and it brings up a box for you save in
your file or change it to other drives where every you try to save in the
file box the image is untitled and is shown as a BITMAP and you can not save
as a JPEG even clicking on to the box to see if there is an option to change
to there is no options available and it has no image number that was saved on
the site ! why has it changed ? why is the browser not accepting JEPG's any
more can I change this or has a software update changed this ? please help ?

When this mysteriously happened to me, I was advised to empty my MSIE
cache. Amazingly, it worked. (Truly a terrible piece of design that
allows a *cache* to interfere with correct operation.)

I think that has to do with the site itself, the author didn't load the
pictures properly. I just downloaded pictures from a site, normal leftclick.
They were all tagged with a number and designated JPG but could download
only as Untitled and Bitmap. Rightclicking for Properties indicated that
Type was Unknown. That same site had Archives of similar pictures, they
downloaded out with number and JPG as intended. Mystery!

No because the first thing I did was go back to a site where I did have JPEGs
saved and the old image is now a BITMAP when it was saved before as a Jpeg,
in fact the 20 or so regular sites I go to are all BITMAPs now! so no not a
web design fault it's my browser, cache or system ?

Just a thought...but sometimes I get an
option to save as .bmp and a simple
click on the IE Refresh button reverts
the file to .jpg.

And sometimes it can clear the issue up
if you navigate to your Temporary Internet
Files folder;

C:\Documents and Settings\>user name<\
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files..

And delete everything in it...files, folders...
everything.

And maybe these articles will shed some light:

Amazing, John! It works! I went back to the site and, sure enough, the
Untitled and Bitmap pictures came out downloadable with their names and JPG
as intended after I hit the IE Refresh button. Thanks for a very useful tip
that saves from having to use Photoshop to process the monster Bitmaps to
JPG.

You're welcome.

It still may be worthwhile to read the articles.

To empty the cache:

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, under Tools>Internet Options,
"General" tab, in the Temporary Internet Files pane, click on
the "Delete Files" button.

To work around the problem, click Tools, click Internet Options, click the
Advanced tab, click to clear the Do not save encrypted pages to disk check
