Jpeg or Jpg?!?

Alun Williams

I have recently gone from using a Win98 pc to a new XP home unit.

I have a website for my band that I wanted to save the images to my new
machine. Which I duly did.

Not being totally up to date with XP's "weird" document folder set-up I
couldn't immediately find my images so I performed a search for *.jpg but
failed to find them.

After a bit of searching around I found my images but instead of being
called 1234.jpg etc they had been saved as 1234.jpeg .... note the extra E
added. On further examination I found that whatever page I go to if I right
mouse button click and save as, although the image is called 5678.jpg for
example, it is always saved as 5678.jpeg.

Although this is not a major problem I would be interested to know if there
is any way to correct this. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for responding Wesley,

Unfortunately the solution you supply is not for the question I asked. I
have not trouble saving jpegs, it's just the extension is saved as
picture.jpeg as opposed to picture.jpg , note the extra E in jpeg.

I had already searched the NG and seen this fix for *.bmp's and given it a
try but it hadn't fixed the problem, hence my question.

Again, thanks for responding but does anyone know the way to fix this
problem.

Regards

Alun

..jpg and .jpeg are essentially the same thing. XP treats these two
extensions the same way. Some systems name them one way, others name them
the other way. PC's typically use the former, since 3-letter extensions
are the norm. however you'll find them named either way. when you use
IE's (or any other browser's) "save image as" function it'll default the
name to the way the web page has named it; you could of course edit it
right then and there (in the save dialog), or accept the default name.

this is not an IE bug, it's just naming the file the way the web site told
it to.

I know the pictures on my website were uploaded as *.jpg yet when I download
them they are *.jpeg

Also if I right mouse button click and go for a pictures properties (on any
website I tested) it tells me its called (for example) picture.jpg yet when
I save it the extra E appears and it become picture.jpeg .

As you say, not a major problem as Windows treats them the same and if I
want to I can change the name as I save it. The problem I am envisaging is
that I'm sure I'll find that some third party application in the future WILL
have problems with this and I'll have to manually rename any files I want to
use. I just wanted to nip it in the bud beforehand.

Looks like I'll have to do a bit more investigation into this or try through
MS themselves.

Thanks for replying though.
