When I sign into windows messenger & look in the network
advanced setting I am not getting the msmsgs tcp or the
msmsgs upd port assignments. I tried uninstalling 4.7 &
reinstalling with no luck.I cannot use voice unless I
disable windows firewall (I never had to do this
before). Can anyone tell me why I am not getting the upd &
tcp assignments when I sign in.

Thanks Carmine

Greetings Carmine,

Usually reinstalling your network card (assuming you're using a NIC with your optonline
service) can "force" this to work again. To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories,
Communications, Network Connections, right-click your network connection and choose Disable.
Next, click Start, right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Choose the Hardware tab,
and then click the Device Manager button. Click the '+' next to Network adapters, then
right-click your network card, and choose Uninstall. Then, after confirming to uninstall,
click the Action menu, and choose Scan for hardware changes. Your network adapter should
then be reinstalled.

After this, reboot and see if there are any change. If it still doesn't work, click Start,
then Run, then type the following:
netsh int ip reset reset.txt
and click OK.

You'll see a screen briefly, which will then disappear. After this, restart once again and
see if it works.

Hi Carmine,

Do the reinstall network card trick again and see if
that solves it (temporarily), however,

Jonathan actually this problem is on my friends computer
he is the only one out of 4 of us who does not get the
assignment of the ports like we do when you just sign in
with windows messenger for Xp. I tried the trick on my
computer & I lost the assignments also & could not get
them back. I did a system restore & then I got the port
assignments automatically when I just signed on. I did
notice that when you do the uninstall of the nework
device you do lose all the checks in your manual port
assignments for MSN and any others you may have.I was
able to get mine with restore but his is doing this to
long and the restore points are to far gone.So either I
would think it is something on your trail or some
corrupted file in messenger somewhere. What is you
opinion?

Hi Carmine,

Interesting -- have you actually checked that the ports
aren't being opened? I'm just asking
