Jeff Stephenson [MSFT]? Outlook 2003 SP1 sending through wrong account, no hotfix planned ?

Hi,

I have discovered today that my Outlook 2003 SP1 is sending some e-mails
from the wrong account (because the recipient sees "on behalf of" that I am
not using) and after spending a couple of hours searching in Google I have
found the following thread where Jeff Stephenson [MSFT] posted some useful
information:

To summarize, the problem is that when you have Outlook 2003 (SP1?) with
several accounts and you try to send a message from one of them, if there is
some problem with the SMTP server of that account, the message will go
through other account, which is unacceptable from my point of view. In that
thread Jeff said that the problem happens if you are not authenticating to
the SMTP server and that the solution is to authenticate. I want to bring
the attention to another case: if you ARE authenticating but the SMTP server
has some sporadic problem, Outlook will receive an error and will use
another account. It happens that I have changed my domain host provider and
the new one seems to have usual problems with its STMP server (that I am
reporting to them separately) and since I switched 3 weeks ago I have
discovered today that many e-mails from me were sent through another
account, which is a huge problem for me. So, the hotfix that will not be
released because authentication is the solution, is really needed. I prefer
"non-delivery reports" to try again that sending important messages through
the wrong account. Of course, the main problem is my e-mail provider, but I
think that in no case Outlook should send e-mails from another account.

Any chance of releasing that hotfix?

I'd agree with this as well. We should send our wishes to outwish at
microsoft dot com.

Jeff is aware of the other reasons why it fails to send on the correct

Yes, yes, but I am in the less common case, where I am using SMTP
authentication but there is some sporadic or no so sporadic problem with my
SMTP Server and my e-mails are sent through the wrong account instead of
reporting the failure. So, I am wondering if the hotfix will be released, if
it will be fixed in a Service Pack or if I must switch to Outlook Express
for the problematic account...

from the Outlook trace. After this error, Outlook 2003 SP1 sends the message
through another (very wrong) account...

authentication solves the problem you're hitting *without* the hotfix as
well, so everybody saves time without the hotfix.". So, setting
authentication solves the problem for those who are not authenticating, but
I am already authenticating, although with the sporadic problem below that
my host provider is investigating. So, I am now in a situation that forces
me to use other e-mail client until my host provider fixes the problem (how
to know if it is fixed for good?) or MS fixes the bug in Outlook 2003 SP1
with a hotfix, service pack or whatever...

Thanks Diane,

After further investigation, it happens that my e-mail provider does not use
SMTP authentication but pop-before-smtp, which are different things, and
since the radiobutton to force "pop-before-smtp" in the Outgoing Server tab
is only available for POP accounts, but not for IMAP accounts, you get the
problem sending e-mails after 30 minutes of inactivity, and somehow my
Outlook was not configured to retrieve e-mail every 5-10 minutes... so now
it is fixed on my side and furthermore my e-mail provider is going to
support SMTP authentication, which would solve too the problem. Anyway, MS
should fix the bug on their side, since sending e-mails from the wrong
account is not acceptable in some scenarios...
