Java virtual machine problems

I am having constant problems with web pages that require
Java Virtual Machine to view them. I have tried to follow
the maze of Microsoft instruction pages to fix the
problem, but I can't seem to get it right. Mostly this is
because I don't speak tech, and I can't understand what
I'm supposed to do. Exery software fix, patch or
whaterver that I download prompts me to download another
fix or patch when I try to install. And when I try to
find the next required fix or patch, I get stonewalled by
the Microsoft search engine, even though I type in the
file or patch name exactly as it appears in the prompt
window. I freely admit I'm a computer idiot, and I'm
hoping that someone will take pity on me. I'm running XP
Pro 2002, and have no other known problems besides my
inability to support or replace Java Virtual Machine. If
someone could "draw me a map" in layman's terms, I would
really appreciate it. Thanx.

go to java.com, a Sun site, and download their java virtual machine, and
forget Microsoft's virtual machine.

This is not statement about the quality of Microsoft's implementation,
or anything like that, just a recognition that, for the most part, since
Microsoft has been forced to abandon the future of its virtual machine,
most Web Java apps are written with the Sun VM in mind.

Also, installation of the current JVM is straightforward, while
Microsoft's VM requires a series of patches.
