Java problem

I have had a problem with Java since upgrading one of our computers from
Windows ME to XP. Java won't run. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java,
checked all the settings according to posts on this site as well as
information I could gather on the internet. We have another PC that was XP
from the beginning and Java runs okay on it. I sync'd all Explorer settings
between the 2 computers making all setings equal to the computer on which
Java runs okay.

I stopped trying to resolve this a few months ago and assumed that if there
was anything we wanted to looked at that required Java, we would just use
the computer that runs Java - it was an XP machine from the beginning. Now
there is something I would like to run on the java impaired computer that
needs Java. I am asking one more time if anyone has an idea of how I might
get Java running. My daughter has 2 computers almost identical to ours and
her ME to XP computer will not run Java either. Java ran fine under ME but
not now since the XP upgrade that occurred over a year ago.

Thank you for your help.

Add/Remove Programs has an entry for J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6.
When I open the Java entry in the Control Panel, "About" shows 2 Platform
Standard Edition from Sun. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for
your help.

Have you tried running the Java applet (Control Panel) then in advanced tab,
selecting the options for tracing and the consol?
Also tried in Safe Mode?
There are Forums available on the Sun Java site.
Since the problem occurs on two sys that were updated from ME, and not on
the winxp default sys, the nuke.option would be a clean install of XP. There
are many who suggest an o/s upgrade from a win9* sys can cause unforseen
problems.

I sympathize with you and can well imagine your frustration in not getting
your Java problem resolved yet after several attempts to do so. However, you
haven't told us what the problem actually is so it is very hard to help you.

Right now, I feel a lot like a car mechanic who gets a call from someone
saying that they're having car trouble, want it diagnosed over the phone,
but won't tell me what model of car it is, what isn't working, or what odd
behaviours might have preceded the problem; all I'm hearing is that you have
a problem and are frustrated by it.

If you describe what you are trying to do that isn't working, it would be a
lot easier to suggest something that you may not have tried. It would be
especially useful if you told us what kind of Java code you are running - an
applet? an application? a servlet? - and what errors/diagnostic messages you
are getting. Since you mention Explorer, I'm inclined to guess it might be
an applet that is giving you trouble but that could be a red herring for all
I know.

Also, I think that you should post this information to one of the Java
newsgroups rather than here; there are lots of Java experts there while this
newsgroup has a whole lot of Windows users but probably only a few Java
users. I would recommend comp.lang.java.programmer as the best place to ask
your question and give your symptoms. If an applet really is the culprit, be
sure that you give the URL so that the people there can try the applet
themselves. That should help diagnose the problem.
