java error message

I have the game channel on my computer. when clicking on
recent messages and choosing to play a game before
downloading it,i receive an error msg reading" error
setting java interface. please make sure the java vm is
set up on your system". i tried help and support on my
computer but it tells me i don't have an internet
connection and messages will be sent when it is
connected, but i'm able to connect otherwise. i have
bellsouth dsl cable if that helps someone figureout my
problem. any advice is greatly appreciated.
