My antivirus software AVG has detected the above virus in my applications but
it cannot remove it. Is there anyway I can get this off my computer without
having to take it to a repair shop.

Yes, and very easily. Download and install Crap Cleaner,
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Run it and it will empty your Java cache.

Once that is done, go to java.com and download the latest version and
then go to Control Panel/Add Remove and remove the previous versions.

Uninstall all older versions of Java from Add/Remove Programs (see below
for the current version). After the reboot, scan again with AVG. If
Java folders are still left in C:\Program Files or C:\Windows (where
"C:\" is your system drive), delete them and empty the Recycle Bin.

If the AVG scan is now clean, install the latest version of Java from
here:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You want the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.

If you want to be very sure that your computer is clean of other malware
that AVG will not have detected, here are general malware removal
steps. Go through them systematically.
