Its Not Personal, Its Just Good Business Practice.... LOL

Is it true that some Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus companys, their associates
and distant cousins once removed, actually create and let loose bugs on an
unsuspecting world just to sell their products.

Now thats cleaver.

If I owned a business that fixed broken windows, I would never be short of
customers, for if indeed business was slow, I could send a friend out to
break a few windows.

You must have been watching Charlie Chaplin's movie
"The Kid". What you say is, of course possible but it has
one minor problem: The moment the word gets out (e.g.
via a disgruntled staff member) the company would be
wiped out. Some large investment houses that issued "buy"
recommendations for stock that they themselves were
trying to off-load are stark examples of how this approach
will ultimately backfire.

No it is not true. They don't need to resort to this as MickeyMouse has done
the job for them by leaving more holes in Windoze than Swiss cheese. But,
I need to retract my statement. Yes, it is true ... in the case of the
anti-virus protection MickeyMouse sells. They build a toy operating system
that is inherently insecure and also benefit by selling anti-virus software
that tries to plug these holes.

Windoze breaks by itself. You don't need to send a friend out to do it.

Love those old movies.

Lets hope it would back fire.

Sorry all about the spelling, wasn't paying attention in spelling
class at school. As I am using a browser are there any spell
checkers for browsers?

No folks its not the Anti-spyware or Anti-virus companys creating
the bugs, its everyone else.

Found on my PC:

"Trojan.NSAnti.A" (High Threat)

"Adware.Zango" (Medium Threat)

"Not-A-Virus.Monitor.Win32.Iopus.A" (Low Threat)

I am fed-up having to always check the PC for bugs !
Low Threat, High Threat, No Threat, its dam annoying.
I wasn't Grumpy before I bought this computer.

Trojan.NSAnti.A (High Threat)
This malicious software masquerades as a useful program or file
to gain the user's trust. Once opened, it executes malicious
computer code.

1 trace detected in the following location:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jetsons.scr

I love the Jetsons, now I can't even have the happiness of a

Jetsons screen saver.

Adware.Zango (Medium Threat)
Adware is any software packege which automatically plays,
displays, or downloads advertising material to a computer after
the software is installed on it or while the application is being
used. Adware is often bundled with, or integrated into, other
software products.

1 trace detectedin the following location:
G:\G Drive Documents\Install

Packets\Video\DigiModeVCD234.exe

This is a crappy little VCD player, and even it has a bug in it.

Not-A-Virus.Monitor.Win32.Iopus.A" (Low Threat)
This is mostly a non malicious program, but it is possible that it
can be misused by a Hacker to gain access to a system or to
recieve important passwords.

2 traces detected in the following locations:
C:\Program Files\MagiX\UNZDLL>DLL
C:\Program Files\MagiX\ZIPDLL>DLL

MagiX is the free version of MagiX Video Editor, now even
software companies are giving us bugs.

http://geekswithblogs.net/jawad/archive/2005/06/23/IESpellCheck.aspx - but
you'd be better off not using the web interface to the groups anyway. Use a
newsreader (OE, Forte Agent) and use news.microsoft.com as the NNTP server.

It's your responsibility as a computer owner to make sure your computer runs
cleanly. It isn't a toaster oven you can just plug in, regardless of what
the marketing departments would like you to think.

Malware != virus. Keep your antivirus software updated, lock down IE or use
Firefox, use a good firewall, try the MS AntiSpyware beta.

You downloaded and installed this yourself, I presume? You need to exercise
caution.

Be careful what you "invite in" by downloading and installing. There is very
little free stuff that's actually free.

I've got 15,000 free applications here that are safe and free. However
they won't help Windows users... ;o)

For safe Windows freeware, visit <http://www.pricelessware.org>. The
applications there are the very best freeware programs in each class, as
voted on by the members of alt.comp.freeware. And those people have NO
tolerance for adware, spyware, viruses, or trojans.

Thanks Lanwench and Arachnid for the advice and links.

"pricelessware" would inspire more confidence if its
home page and links were not 2 years old (2004).

Download.com manages to list applications on their day
of release by the developer, probably a bit dangerous as
no one has really tested them.

All I want for Xmas is a Jetsons screen saver with no
bugs and I will be Happy.

First there was UNIX, then variants BSD, DOS (with a Windows GUI) and LINUX.

Download.com also has many demo, limited feature, and other garbage
related files on it too. I find it pretty useless.

And it would help if the original poster I quoted would disseminate an
accurate site, and the previous site maintainer would drop their site.
A lot of sites are pretty messed up in that way.

You would do better to try http://www.pricelesswarehome.org

OK, I had to go ask on this one. I had the wrong site in mind.
pricelessware.org is no longer maintained. Someone else picked
