It shuts itself off

My PC, WinXPHome, shuts off as though someone pulled the
plug. It is working from a new APC batt. backup supply in
case the power fails. I think it is a software problem
since my daughter's PC is doing the same thing. Can this
be a worm, virus, etc.? If so, how do I get rid of it?

If it is a worm or virus then simply run your virus scan program. (if memory
serves me right the Blaster Worm was known to simply turn systems off.)

I just ran the scan via Norton and no virus was detected.
Any other suggestions?

Make sure when you run your virus scan, that you have
downloaded the "latest" virus definitions from the
symantec website. It won't do you any good if your virus
software is not up to date.

Shutting down like that does sound like the symtoms of the
Blaster virus. It can also be caused by a faulty power
supply.
