It is okay to shut off your computer

R

Rachel Kozlowski

I just installed Windows 2K pro and now everytime I
shutdown it tells me "it is okay to shut off your
computer". I want it to shut down without this message
appearing. Any ideas?

Also, when I do press the off button to shut off the
computer a while later (not right away) the computer
reboots itself. No error occured in the shutdown, but it
always does this.

Please help,

Rachel

One possible problem is the following registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
It should contain a value of type REG_SZ named PowerdownAfterShutdown,
and its data should be 1.

This may not be enough to solve this problem, but I think that it is a
necessary step.

No clue on this one.

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for posting!

As I understand, the problem is as follows:

1. When you shutdown the computer, the "it is OK to shut down the computer"
message appears.

2. Then, when you press the Power button to shutdown the computer, it
reboots.

Is this correct?

Based on my experience, this issue should be with power managent. This is
tightly related to the mother board. The first behavior may be related to
APM settings. However, the second behavior should be with the main board.
When you press the Power button to switch off, the main board should power
off the computer, instead of reboot it.

For the first behavior, you can go to Control Panel and double click Power
Options. Is there a tab named APM? If so, please click on the tab and
enable the option there.

For the second behavior, I would suggest you contact the manfuacturer of
the mainboard to see if they have any BIOS update. Updating the BIOS may
help in resolving this issue.

Hope this information helps. Thank you!
