It goes away

Athough the icon is still in the system tray, if you pull
up task manager and look at applications running it has
disappeared. Ten minutes after I run a scan my system had
8 spyware infections already. It cleans them off just
fine, but it does'nt prevent them from installing.

Are you running an antivirus with current definitions?

Please update your definitions, both for Microsoft Antispyware (5691 is
current) and your antivirus app.

Then restart in safe mode by pressing F8 before Windows comes up.

Do full, deep scans with Microsoft antivirus until one comes through clean.

Do a scan with your antivirus, and rescan until one comes through clean.
You can do both scans at the same time, but it will be somewhat slower and
there's some risk of interactions between the two.
