It doesn't burn !!

I have the following problem, can anybody tell me what they think, I
just can't find the explanation to it :
I'm trying to burn data on a dvd, I used several softwares, Nero,
record now, and they all can't recognize the dvd, they send a message
saying insert an empty DVD-R while that's what's in there.Before this
prob btw ,my burner worked for regular CD-R, I never tried to burn a
dvd , but here there is a prob, does anybody know why?

It sounds like the laser used for DVD burning is defective.
