Issues with opening a document in Word 2003

I have a brand new pc that came with Microsoft XP Pro and Microsoft
Office Basic Edition (Word, Excel, and Outlook). The user used to have
Microsoft 2000 with Office 2002 (XP). When she tries to open any of her
previous Word documents from her My Documents folder (roaming profiles
with the home directory on a NAS server), Word opens, but doesn't open
the document. If she opens Word first, then tries to open any of her
documents, it works fine. If she creates a new document and saves it
(anywhere), she has the exact same issue with the new one.

Please Help!!!!!!!!

It sounds like Windows has forgotten that .doc documents are associated with
Word. You'll need to re-register Word as described at
How to re-register Word when problems crop up opening files

I later found that if an administrator logged into the pc, it worked
fine. It was only having an issue with her account. We deleted her old
profile (both the roaming and local) and had her log back in. This
created a new profile, and the issue was there anymore.
