Why so many stars for so few four-leaf clovers?

Hello all!

My DVD player, "ASUS DVD-Romanian E616" worked fine until the day when it
refused to read and to detect any DVDs.

It is still reading CDs without any problem but nothing to do for the DVDs.

I thought that the drivers could have been misconfigured. I re-installed a
more recent version of them without no result.

Purchased another DVD player which I installed on my computer and installed
the ASUS on a indentical workstation.

Result : the new player works fine but the ASUS (detected by P&P without any
problem) is still refusing to detect DVDs.

I do not think that it is hardware issue because in that case it would not
read CDs either.

Apparently it is not a zone problem (it's zone 2 here).

Any idea ?

Configuration of the two workstations:

P 850 MHz
384 Mo RAM
Windows Professionnal XP SP2 (all updates done).

Hi,
It is a DVD problem.
2 different wavelenghts (circuits) are used for each fo the two (different)
formats.
One emitter/receptor is cooked or a (dirty) focusing lens with only let thru
(enough of) 1 wave to read/write CDs.

Sounds good for me.

Thank a lot : I'll check the lens as a first approach.
