Issue with WindowsXP losing CDrom support and reassigning drive letters at will

I am in need of serious help! I've reinstalled and reset
up my pc more than 3 times so far, and each time
windowsXP is becoming more volatile than the last time.
I do a total disk format, and start fresh each time, to
avoid any issues with something not overwriting
properly. THis last install, windows applied files to
both of my harddrives, and actually placed the operating
system on drive D: with boot information on Drive C: I
cannot reassign the drives, as both are considered
windows OS drives.

The CDRoms - I get error messages like the below so often
and see the drives vanish from windows explorer, as well
as return to windows explorer as if they'd never left -
however, they are not accessible during these timeframes.

To make it more interesting - I have had XP on my pc
before this crash working for 2 years without an issue of
any kind, so I know my hardware is all in compliance and
works with each other well.

I have no clue what to do.

If you're having these sorts of problems with a clean install, especially on
a computer that was running well before, it's time to start looking at
hardware problems.
