Is Windows Vista Disc startup documented

I attempted to install Vista on my 'ol laptop. It has only 256MB RAM and
tends to overheat if it runs the DVD drive too long [e.g. to get Visual
Studio installed on the thing I have to elevate the it and use a fan to
drive airflow around the whole laptop].

Anyway, Vista installer checks and will refuse to install on it, citing
insufficient RAM. Fine. I left the thing on all night rebooted and ran the
install again .. but there was a "memory" problem this time 'round [probably
from overheating].

Lo and behold I get some options ..

... including the opportunity to run a memory diagnostic utility. This
utility is not normally available. It is from the Windows Vista disc. How
does one circumvent the install/repair routine of the Vista discs and go
straight to this utility? Because it is otherwise hidden. And what other
boot 'n startup utilities are on that Windows Vista disc? And can I read up
on this whole thing?

When the "Press any key to boot the CD or DVD..." prompt comes up press
and hold the Spacebar. At least that is what I've read.
