I had a C drive die; it is replaced. I bought a "disk enclosure" that you
can put that internal-style disk into, and it is USB, so can be connected to
the PC externally. When i do this, the light comes on for a long time; in
fact it seem forever; at least up until now i have not waited long enough
for the disk to come up in the explorer (several hours). I was hoping to
mount it and then be able to recover some stuff from the disk using one of
those disk recovery programs (even tho it is not bootable at this point).

Is this disk totally dead? Does anybody know of any utilities or have
recommendations as to how i might be able to read at least some stuff off of
it?

Thanks, tom

Hello Tom,

Is the jumper on the drive set to Master (should be)?
Is the drive recognized in Administrative Tools => Computer Management
=> Disk Management?

You could try a Linux Live Distro. Most of these invole a ~700 MB
download, but here's a small one. It may be better to install the
wonked HDD as a Slave in the computer, but either way:

Linux Austrumi 0.9.7

The advantage of Austrumi is that it loads entirely into RAM . After
it has loaded, the CD is ejected, thus freeing up the CD burner for
writing. Actually you don't even need to have a Hard Drive installed
for the program to function.

Download the .iso file (less than 50MB) from here (choose a location
nearer you):

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/austrumi/austrumi-0.9.7.iso

(This link may change with the ever-changing versions. Different
versions have a different desktop and GUI.)

Burn the downloaded image to a CD using a burner capable of
burning .iso files. Don't just copy the file to a CD - but use a
burner capable of burning an image file.

Instructions - you should print these off:

Insert the Austrumi CD and restart the computer.
At the boot: command, hit Enter

This default language for this program is Latvian so you have to
change the language to English (unless, of course, you understand
Latvian!!!).

Go to Start (bottom left) => Darbavirsme => and click on Anglu

If you need/want to access the Internet:

Start => Network => Netconfig
Select (highlight) dhcp and click OK
Workstation name - leave as is and click OK
OK at the next screen

Locating Windows files

Note:
Although you can copy files, you can't move or delete files from an
NTFS file system, only FAT32.

Click on emelFM2 (a file manager) in the taskbar (4th from the left)
and navigate to mnt/hda1/ etc. These are your Hard Drives (hda1, hda2,
etc.).

Double-clicking on these hda folders accesses the Hard Drives.

Note:
In this Linux file manager, there's no equivalent to "Paste". You use
the "Copy" button twice - once to "Copy" and again where you want to
"Paste".

(The buttons are in the middle of the window). These commands are also
available with a right-click.

To access USB drives

In emelFM2 click the `USB` button at the bottom-right. USB drives show
as sdb1/ etc. Files can be copied to/from USB drives.

CD burning - e.g. Windows files in this example

1. Click CD Tools in the taskbar (the icon on the extreme right).

2. Click the 'Data CD' tab at the top.

3. Click the 'Add Directory Contents' button.

4. Double-click on ../ in the 'Directories' pane.

5. Select mnt/ and double-click on it.

6. Double-click on hda1/ (if it's the C: drive you want to access).

7. By double-clicking, navigate to the folder/files you want to burn.
The folders to be burned will show in the 'Directories' pane, and the
files within a

folder will be listed in the 'Files' pane in the right-hand pane.
Whatever is in this right-hand pane will be what is burned.

8. You can remove folders and/or files from the burn list by
highlighting them and clicking on the 'Remove Directory' or 'Remove
File' button(s) on the

left.

9. When you are ready to burn, click the Burn button.

10. Insert a good quality CD and click the 'Burn' button.

11. Select 'Joliet' from the drop-down menu and click on 'Single
Session'.

12. Click the 'Burn' button. At "Really burn the CD" click Yes.

When the burn is finished, check the finished CD for reliability,
either:

1. Click on emelFM2 in the Taskbar and navigate to => mnt => cdrom

or ...

2. In another computer
