Hi to all,

My next PC is due soon and same one did warn me about WindowsXP. He said
that every time I connect to the net, my PC will get checked what
programs are installed.
I believe he is having me on, but do you know about this?

not true, If you have a program that you tell to get a
auto update, well yes it will check the site for a up-
date, the rest is bunk.

He may believe it, but it's not true. Some programs check for updates
automatically so that they can stay current, but you can, almost always,
turn these features off.

If he does have something in his computer that is doing what he says it is
some kind of spyware downloaded from the internet, it may have came with a
program he installed.

It can be tested by downloading Adaware. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
or one of many other spyware busting programs.

Hi Gery,

He was probably referring to "automatic updates". That is part of XP and, it
can be turned off. It just checks the operating system for updates, it
doesn't do an inventory of your programs or personal files.

My guess is that he was given misinformation by someone who does not
understand activation, both what it is and how it works. There are many
people who actually believe that what Gery described happens with WinXP. It
is of course, totally false, but belief is a powerful thing and easily
propagated.
