Is this caused by a virus?

Hi

I'm running windows XP on my computer. The computer is running smooth and
with no problem, but this one.

Untill 3 weeks ago I was using Norton Antivirus, and suddently one day it
didn't start up (no error messages). I tried to reinstall - but with no
success. The installation program couldn't copy the .exe file.
I tried with the symantec removal tool - with no success.

Since then I've tried AVG, AVAST, Kaspersky demo and a couple more. All
resulting in deletion of the .exe file.

I tried scanning with a online scanner, and it doesn't find any
viruses........

Can someone explain me what to do??

Hi CJ ,

The question maybe what or who is deleting your executables ?!

Are you using a firewall ? I would recommend using a good one that
monitors both incoming and outbound traffic
If your not already and turn the security settings up.

Run the AV software you mentioned again and monitor your firewall
activity carefully.

Also try these ...

Spybot Search & Destroy - locations to download from can be found here
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

AVG Free Anti-rootkit scanner
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=arw

run Msconfig from the start > Run (dialog box)

Msconfig allows you to disable programs that run on startup via the
Startup tab. If you do this you will get a warning
on reboot that you system is in a diagnostic mode.

If you are sure there is something viral here then you can find and
delete the source by looking at the command/location column. You may
need to edit the registry only do this if you are familiar with using
the registry and make a backup first.

If your still having problems run hijackThis to generate a log

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php#

HijackThis does not determine what is good or bad. Do not make any
changes to your computer settings unless you are an expert computer
user.

Don't post your hijackThis log here , there are many forums on the web
where people can advise you on the log output, or you can reply to me
directly.
