Hi,

I have Windows XP Home SP2. When I first got my machine (HP Pavilion
zt3350EA), everything worked fine. But now, whenever I delete a file, it
just disappears without appearing in the Recycle Bin first. I have
unchecked the option to delete files without placing them in the Bin, so I
am now baffled.

Also, no matter what I do, the Bin always claims it has something in it. I
open it, and there is nothing there...But when I click
to empty it, it asks me if I want to empty it as if it is housing deleted
files.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Neil

Deleted items don’t go to the Recycle Bin

There are a number of reasons for files and folders to bypass the
Recycle Bin. First, Windows designed the Recycle Bin to hold only items
you delete from the hard drive. When you delete items from a floppy
diskette or removable media, such as a Zip drive, Windows bypasses the
Recycle Bin and deletes them. This rule also applies to files and
folders stored on another computer. For example, if you network several
PCs in your home, files that you delete on a different PC are not placed
in the Recycle Bin. Another consideration is the Recycle Bin’s
Properties settings. If your Recycle Bin is deactivated, all items you
delete are permanently deleted. To check whether the Recycle Bin is
deactivated, right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, click
Properties, and click the Global tab in the Recycle Bin Properties
dialog box. If the Do Not Move Files To The Recycle Bin. Remove Files
Immediately When Deleted checkbox is selected, the Recycle Bin is turned
off. Click to clear the checkbox and click OK. Note that this option may
instead display on the individual hard drive tabs of the Recycle Bin’s
Properties dialog box. This occurs if you select Configure Drives
Independently on the Global tab. Finally, because the Recycle Bin is a
Windows feature, it is not available at the command prompt level. If you
delete files at a C: prompt using the DEL command, for example, the
files bypass the Recycle Bin and are permanently deleted.

P.S. Do you have any Norton Utitlies Installed? Especially norton System
Works? This suite has the protected recylce bin which could be a lage
part of your problem.

Also... what happens if you do this:
Open Windows Explorer
Click Tools | Options | View
tick show hidden files or folders
untick hide operating system files (recommended)
Now browse to C:\ and see if there is a folder there called 'RECYLCER'

If there isn't, that's your problem and we'll need to find out how to
re-create that.

Have you made sure that you've selected to view hidden files AND to

of these attributes so you MUST make sure they're set correctly before
you can see it.

I've not created a Recylcer directory before but let's try this. Open up
Windows Explorer and simply create a directory called C:\RECYCLER -
right click the directory and select the hidden attribute. Now test and
see if you can delete to the recycle bin

No, by default you'll want to hide the Operating System files - this
step was just for troubleshooting. The fact that the file is there means
we're heading down the wrong track. As i've said, it's 3:30 AM over
here... I'm going to get some sleep or I might accidentally get you to
do the fdisk c:\ command ;)

Take it easy, I hope Gabriele can help - try looking around that

First install TweakUI. I have only Windows ME, but if it is done the
usual way, you have to right click the tweakui.inf file, and choose
"install". Then you'll get some info messages, and confirm those.

After this, TweakUI should be sitting in your control panel. Double
click and run it, change to the "repair" tab. There should be a drop
down list that offers to repair several things, like the icons.

Hum. My ME version doesn't show a specific "recycled" entry ("recycled"
is the German version). Maybe "System Files"?

Confused...

That's even worse than mine.

A Google search shows that restoring the recycle bin properly, needs to
work with the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> MICROSOFT -> WINDOWS -> CurentVersion
-> Explorer -> Desktop -> NameSpace

Create new entry as DWORD
value {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Others had the idea to activate the properties of the desktop, navigate
to "desktop" and "configure desktop", then to the recycle bin, choose
the full and empty icon symbols and "restore" both.

Whilst I'm not a newbie to computers, I have never editted the registry

is a registry patch that will do that automatically?

And I restored the icons, but it didn't help.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Whilst I'm not a newbie to computers, I have never editted the registry
before, so I dont feel confident in doing the above. Do you know if there
is a registry patch that will do that automatically?

And I restored the icons, but it didn't help.

Thanks for all your help so far!
Adding the entry, as Gabriele has instructed, will not pooch your registry.

Optikl,

It isn't the fact that I am scared that this entry will mess up my registry,
it's the fact that I have never added any entries and don't want to do it
without knowing exactly what I am doing.
