Is this a hardware or software error?

Lately, I have been getting the following type of error message in random
applications (sometimes only):
_________________________________________
(application).exe - Application Error
The exception Unknown Software Exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the
application at location 0x7c812a5b.
OK
------------------------------------------------------

Selecting the OK leads to another smaller error window indicating a runtime
error 217 at (number varies)

After running CHKDSK /F (and then /R), SFC /scannow, AV and AdAware and
SpyBot scans, and a repair install, it did not get fixed.

Somebody here said that it is actually a hardware problem - most likely my
RAM.

Could it possibly be? Thanks in anticipation for any insights.

Try running Memtest86+, this runs from a boot disk and should eliminate or
confirm if your ram is bad.
Let it run for as long as you can, 2,4,6,8 or more hours, if no errors by
then your ram is OK.

Hi JS,

Thanks for the response and the helpful link. I just downloaded the ISO and
will burn a CD in a little while. May be I will run the test overnight!

Regards.

I did run the test, as planned, overnight. The RAM checked out okay.

Now I am really puzzled by what these errors might mean!

Did you install IE7 by any chance, there have been a number of strange
problems associated with this version?

No, not on this particular machine. I did have some issues with IE 7 on
another PC though - it was uninstalled thereafter.
