Is this a communication problem?

I have Vista Home Premium and it's taking some getting used to. Redmond and I
think differently and at least in XP, I could find where things were to
modify them for my mind. For example, where's the Start Folder? This morning
I wanted to capture part of a webpage. Everything on THIS start folder is in
alphabetical order. My mind doesn't work that way. It thinks, "I need a
graphics program. Do I have one that can do this?" In XP, I had created
folders where programs were grouped like "Audio-Visual tools, Boot Tools,
Burning Tools, Entertainment Tools, Graffix Tools, ..." Etc. I want to
recreate that. My computer is a Compaq. I contacted them and they guided me
to
http://www.powerdonkey.net/vista/start_menu.php
which was great but I don't want to return to the XP look, I want to modify
the Vista look. To do that I need to know where they hid the Start menu
folder.

After a long, frustrating half hour typing explanations to HP Chat, I typed
this"There is a folder somewhere on my computer that stores the shortcuts to
my
programs. The results are graphically shown when I click START. IN XP, it
was in documents and settings >> Bob >>, but it's not there now in Vista.
WHERE IS THIS FILE?" First I was told that there is no folder called
Documents and Settings in Vista. (DUH) Then, in regards to the start menu, I
was told, and I quote, "Robert, there is no folder in Vista operating system
as it was designed by
Microsoft."

Can anyone else help me? Does anyone else understand what I'm describing,
what I want?

To know the "Start" menu folder, do the following:
1. Click "Start" | "All Programs" menu item.
2. Right-click on any item and select "Properties" menu item.
3. Select "General" tab.
4. See the "Location" field's value.

It is "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" for me. Is this
what you were looking for?

This basically works the same way it did in XP. The only difference is the
location of the Start Menu folders.

To understand the way the Start menu works, you need to understand which
programs appear on that menu.

The Start Menu/All Programs menu will show every program that is in your
user account, Start Menu\All Programs folder.

Your user account Start/All Programs folder is located at:
C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu.

The Start Menu/All Programs menu will also show every program that is in the
All Users, All Programs folder.

The All Users Start/All Programs folder is located at:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu.

To go directly to either one of these folders, right click the Start Button.

Select either Open or Explore and this will open Windows Explorer to:
C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu.

Select either Open All Users or Explore All Users and this will open Windows
Explorer to:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu.

If you want to create a new set of folders that make more sense to the way
you do things, Do this in the All Users folder. You can still drag the
folders to different locations in the Start Menu, just as you did in XP.

Before you get started, right click the Start Button and select
Properties/Customize Button. Scroll down the list and remove the check mark
from the "Sort All Programs menu by name" option.

Oh yes, oh yes! I knew how to find the location of programs in the stare
menu, but YES, Your direction to where the Start Menu folder was all I needed
....and correct. I wish I could contact HP(Compaq) and let THEM know.

BTW, when I hit Start>All Programs, instead of 40 - 50 entries (and bound to
get longer) in my start menu, I now have fit everything into these folders:

Accessories
Administrative Tools
AUDIO VISUAL TOOLS
BURNING TOOLS
ENTERTAINMENT
GRAFFIX TOOLS
INTERNET TOOLS
MISCELLANEUS TOOLS
Startup
UTILITIES
WINDOWS TOOLS
WRITING TOOLS

It works for me! Thank you. Tell me one thing, was I unclear in my intent or
request? Just wondering whether my frustration/anger is justified.

Ronnie has a complete answer. There is a user-specific start menu folder
too.

Your intent and request was clear to me. It may not have been to them. In
any case, frustration/anger does not get the job done. It also does not
affect the other party and only affects yourself negatively. So, why harm
yourself for something not understood by a complete stranger? :)
