I don't know how this started, but I open my Excel, and everything i
fine... I open a file, and things are fine... but once I click on
cell in the document, it continues to select wherever my mouse goes
and nothing seems to stop it!

if I leave the file open, but alt-tab, it will keep scrollin
indefinitely, into 6-figures of cells. ack!

my macros are set on high security, and I don't have any enabled.

any ideas, please

Hi
you have probably invoked the 'extended selection'. Check if there is
an 'EXT' in the statusbar. To switch back hit the F8 key

Frank

Or, strange as it is. Sometimes firmly pressing the wheel (if present)
will also help.

yeah, I saw this in another thread... I tried all the F keys, actually.
no avail.

and the EXT isn't indicated either, as far as I can see.

does this usually happen: once I click on a cell, I can't do anythin
else with Excel, it's toast

This is a *not* uncommon problem.

Read what David McRitchie has written about it:

something that I"m not seeing (tell me if I'm wrong) is that it won'
deselect from the app -- that is, even when I'm not using the ap
(minized, etc), it's still scrolling cells, still selecting a
infinum.

this also means that nothing else can be done once a cell is clicked o
-- but before that, the app is fully functional

I can maneuver with the keyboard without problems, so it seems it'
mouse-related... but I'm NOT using a scrollmouse, just an old PS2 job

Not intending to sound flippant but;
Perhaps it's time to retire the mouse (or clean it)?
Does it work ok in other apps.?

hah! yes, it works fine... seriously, I'm using many apps right now
and they're all fine. even the rest of office is fine

What problem? Most people (at least most people who answer questions)
are using newsreaders as opposed to web interfaced forums. If
you quote essential parts of what you answer it might give us a clue..

This just happened to me on a Dell laptop, running WinXP and Offic
2003, with no external mouse. F8 did not help. Other app's worked fin
- no indication of a stuck key.

Most of http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/ghosting.txt seeme
irrelevant (for instance, I couldn't minimize or maximize - the mous
and keyboard were frozen), but rightclicking the mouse did finally see
to unstick it.

Despite my note of a few weeks ago, I'm still intermittently afflicte
with this, and this time I haven't been able to escape. Is anyone els
still having this problem, or seen a fix?

I'm about to update my TouchPad driver. Hope that helps.
