Is there a way to make rules sort based on categories?

Hi

I'm getting really burned out trying to set up rules for
each and every email address that comes in. Isn't there a
way to get OL to actually move all messages from contacts
in a predefined category to a certain folder?

Distribution list sorting does not cut it because you
can't add a new contact to a distribution list without
going through more than one step as far as I can see. you
have to first add the contact then go open the DistList
and add the contact again. Categories can be set right
from the message itself when the sender is added to the
contact list.

Unfortunately none of the 10 or so rules I set up seem to
do didly squate which makes me wonder why it's even in the
rules manager/wizard in the first place. The only
criteria I have set is that the message sender must be in
the specified category, example: Internet Advertisers.

The group consists of addresses from Microsoft, Buy.com,
Wahlgreens, and other legitimate business email I want put
in a certain folder. Once again the category is the only
condition on the rules nothing else is blocking it from
working.

No, there is no rule for "where contact is in the ... category". Either you
check it on the contact or on the category assigned to the message

I've spent two hours trying to figure out why OL 2003
won't sort by categories when it's in the rules wizard and
as it turns out DistLists won't work either because they
are "private". I'm working at home from a private
computer so I don't know what purpose that serves or how
to turn it off either.

Basically the only thing I can see is Microsoft wants me
to have hundreds of individual rules and somehow keep them
all up to date as campaigns change and business ebbs and
flows.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an email program
that works better than this for high volume business email?

If I could get this to work with using the categories that
would be fine but it's not working and I don't have
unlimited time to figure it out either. Unfortunately I
don't seem to have a number to call technical support
either.

Very disapointing considering what I spent on the Office
Pro package and the way it's advertised.

Sorry don't follow you, my question has nothing to do with
assigning a category the category is already assigned.

The quesiton is in regards to sorting by the category once
it is assigned.

Oh and interestingly enough when I tried to submit a
quesiton via email to Microsoft I got a message that says
the product is not supported in the United States.

Yes, but you stated the category is assigned to the contact; not the
message.

Outlook filters based on message properties (sender, header, body, category,
etc...). It doesn't check on properties of the sender is in the Contacts
folder.

You can however create separate Address Books and have the messages filtered
on that.
